Sea Stories

Bill Thirtle recounts some of his experiences as a lifeboat crew member.

The Yow Yows

Based on tales told by generations of fishermen on the North Norfolk Coast, the Yow-Yows are said to be the ghosts of sailors who were not given formal burials with religious rites. These animations explore two interpretations of the legend.

The Shipden Bells

Shipden was a town beyond Cromer that was gradually washed away by time and tide. Today, when the weather is bad, Cromer fisherman listen for the ghostly boom of old Shipden’s bells beneath the waves; if they hear them it is a warning and they will not go to sea.

The Lone Coastguardsman

Two animations based on the story of the Long Coastguardsman who was killed while attempting to arrest a violent band of smugglers at Mundesley. His body was cut up and thrown into the sea and consequently his spirit can never rest. On stormy nights his ghost walks the coastal path from Mundesley to Bacton.
